Food prices beginning to stabilise, says Competition Commission

In its latest Essential Food Pricing Monitoring Report, released on Monday, the Competition Commission said costs across food value chains were beginning to settle, thanks in part to retailers absorbing some of the price pressure. That’s despite the impact of rolling blackouts, the deteriorating rail and port situation, the avian flu outbreak in April 2023 and global shipping disruptions caused by the conflict in the Red Sea. 


Contested Expropriation Bill closer to becoming law, but don’t hold your breath

The National Council of Provinces, with eight provinces for and the Western Cape against, has adopted the Expropriation Bill. However, the legislation must return to the National Assembly for changes to be approved. That means its 16-year legislative journey is unlikely to be completed before the May elections.
