Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo highlights the potential for significant mutual benefits through collaboration between South Africa and Australia’s agricultural sectors, despite their competitive overlap in seasonal production and export markets. During his visit to Australia, engaging with stakeholders in meat, livestock, grains, academia, and horticulture, Sihlobo noted mutual respect for each country’s contributions to global food, fibre, and beverage trade.Key areas for collaboration include: Trade: South Africa, a net wheat importer (1.8 million tonnes annually), could rely on Australia’s high-quality wheat, and Australia could tap into South Africa’s 1 million tonne rice import market, currently dominated by India and Thailand.

The South African Reserve Bank's (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets next week for its penultimate 2025 session, announcing its decision on September 18 amid divided economist views on whether to hold or cut interest rates. Since starting the easing cycle in September 2024, the MPC has reduced the repo rate by 125 basis points to 7.00% (prime lending rate to 10.50%), with the only hold this year in March due to budget uncertainties and US policy risks under the Trump administration. Inflation has cooled below the 3% midpoint target, enabling cuts, but recent hikes in electricity, utilities, food, and beverages are pushing it upward toward 4.5% by 2026 before returning to 3% by 2027.

Francois Rossouw, the CEO of the Southern African Agri Initiative (Saai), said the 0.8% GDP growth recorded in the second quarter was encouraging, particularly because agriculture, forestry, and fishing registered a solid 2.5% increase  “This performance was driven mainly by stronger output in horticulture and animal products, which shows resilience in the sector despite broader pressures on investment and trade,” he said. South Africa’s existing framework of a 3–6 percent band has long aimed to balance flexibility with discipline. In practice, the midpoint of 4.5 percent became an informal focal point and, over time, too many prices, from administered tariffs to wage norms, settled in the upper half of the band. READ MORE
NEWS  COMMENTARY-
The impending delegation to the US, led by Trade Minister Parks Tau and including officials from trade, industry, competition, and agriculture departments, underscores the urgency of resolving the 30% US import tariff on South African exports, which took effect in August 2025 after a prolonged delay at the US Trade Representative (USTR).This tariff, imposed by the Trump administration as part of a broader global trade reshuffle, stems from perceived imbalances in bilateral trade and has already disrupted supply chains, potentially costing tens of thousands of jobs in key sectors like citrus, automotive components, and metals.South Africa's 2024 exports to the US totaled $14.9 billion, making this a significant economic hit, especially as the country navigates domestic challenges like energy shortages and slow growth.Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen's confirmation of receiving a US counterproposal—after an initial South African framework was rejected and a more concessional version submitted—signals potential progress, with the cabinet reviewing it against national interests. The proposals, including importing 75–100 petajoules of US liquefied natural gas over 10 years ($12 billion value), easing access for US poultry ($91 million in trade) and blueberries, R3.3 billion investments by SA firms in US industries like mining, and exemptions for sectors such as shipbuilding, counter-seasonal agriculture, and small business exports under R1 million annually, reflect a pragmatic approach to reciprocity. These align with the US's demands to address its trade deficit while promoting investment and non-tariff barrier reductions, as outlined in South Africa's May 2025 framework deal.Critically, this negotiation comes at a pivotal moment: the tariffs undermine the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), set for review in September 2025, which has provided duty-free access for SA goods. The government's strategy of market diversification (e.g., new deals for stone fruit to China and grains to Japan) and support for affected businesses—via an Export Support Desk, Localisation Fund, and trade defense measures—is a necessary buffer but highlights the risks of over-reliance on the US market. While the US's unilateral move has been criticized as inscrutable given SA's mere 0.25% share of total US imports, it also presents an opportunity for SA to accelerate industrialization and value addition in minerals and agriculture, rather than extractive trade patterns.Success in these talks could mitigate job losses and stabilize exports, but failure risks escalating tensions, especially with the G20 agriculture ministers' meeting on September 16–17, 2025, where SA could leverage multilateral forums.Overall, this episode exposes the vulnerabilities of emerging economies in a protectionist global landscape, urging SA to prioritize resilient, diversified trade partnerships.

Francois Rossouw, CEO of the agricultural organization Saai, emphasized the critical role of agriculture in sustaining local communities during a dairy cattle discussion at Nampo Cape. Die laaste uitbreking was in 2015.
