The SARB’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), led by Governor Lesetja Kganyago, has shifted its inflation target from the midpoint of 4.5% to the lower end of its 3%–6% range, aiming for 3% inflation. Inflation has been stable at around 3% since October 2024, enabling the SARB to cut interest rates by 125 basis points to 7.00%. The SARB projects an additional 100 basis point cut by the end of 2026, including a 25 basis point cut in 2025, bringing the repo rate to 6.0%. This contrasts with market expectations, as the Forward Rate Agreement (FRA) anticipates only a 50 basis point reduction. The lower inflation target is expected to keep core inflation stable at 3% and support a “new normal” interest rate of 3% by 2027. A stronger rand supports the 3% target, as a 4.5% target would lead to a more depreciated exchange rate, pushing inflation back to 4.5%.

Brazil’s 2024-25 grain harvest is projected to reach a record 345.2 million tonnes, up 47.7 million tonnes from 2023-24, according to Conab’s 11th Harvest Survey (August 14, 2025). This is a 5.6 million-tonne increase from July’s estimate, driven by a 2.5% rise in cultivated area (81.9 million hectares) and a productivity increase from 3,722 kg/ha to 4,214 kg/ha.  Corn output is expected to hit a record 137 million tonnes, a 21.5 million-tonne increase year-on-year. The second corn harvest, nearly 84% complete, is projected at 109.6 million tonnes. Domestic consumption will exceed 90 million tonnes, with carryover stocks at 10.3 million tonnes and exports rising to 40 million tonnes, boosted by global demand shifting to South America amid U.S. tariff disputes.

66% of agricultural businesses cite climate volatility as their top risk in 2024, up from 45% in 2023, driven by unpredictable rainfall and extreme weather like hailstorms. 57% of farmers now have crop insurance, with some diversifying crops or self-insuring.   25% of farmers highlight deteriorating rural roads and transport routes, delaying deliveries and increasing spoilage and costs. Some communities repair roads themselves, adding to high input costs.

Summary of the Weeks Headline news- ( Our mediums is overloaded with Farming and Agriculture news and we have great interest from International medium.)

Jaco Minnaar, AgriSA chairperson, stated at an Agri Limpopo business breakfast that the 30% US tariff on South African agricultural imports, effective since August 1, 2025, will cost the sector $328 million from 2026 to 2030. The automotive industry faces a $1.4 billion loss, and minerals and metals $442 million, with the Eastern Cape economy particularly impacted.

South Africa’s economy is stuck at a 1% growth rate due to low private sector investment, which is 15% below 2020 levels, partly due to investments in Eskom alternatives. High inflation in food, housing, utilities, and transport is unlikely to decrease, adding pressure to the economy.

High raspberry supply due to late arrivals from Spain and Morocco overlapping with local harvests has driven down prices, pressuring growers, especially those on the spot market. Rising labor costs exacerbate challenges, though contract-based growers are less affected.

The blueberry sector in southern Africa, led by South Africa and Zimbabwe, is experiencing rapid growth, driven by favorable climates and proximity to export ports in Cape Town and Durban. South Africa, with key regions like Western Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, exported nearly 25,000 tons in 2024, with projections exceeding 50,000 tons in 2025.

South Africa already affords the US a tariff-free quota of poultry of 70k tonnes. This was never fully utilised by the US for various reasons, including phytosanitary matters. Currently, South Africa imports around 300k tonnes of various poultry products, which make up roughly 20% of the annual consumption.

A study by Stellenbosch University and Mendel University, published in Agrekon, highlights a declining trend in South Africa’s agri-food trade with the EU, despite it being the EU’s largest African trading partner.

South Africa’s apple and pear export industry, represented by Two-a-Day and Link Supply Chain Management, has warned that inefficiencies at the Port of Cape Town have cost the sector R1 billion in 2024 due to additional storage, trucking, and plug-in costs, as well as missed market opportunities when vessels bypass the port.

Land Bank Insurance Company (LBIC) has introduced Area-Yield Index Insurance (AYII), expanding its pilot “index insurance” offerings to support crop farmers against large-scale climatic and environmental risks.
