Over the past 30 years, South Africa’s commercial captive lion breeding industry has grown significantly, housing an estimated 7,838 lions across 342 facilities for tourism (e.g., cub petting), hunting, and trade in lion parts. A study by Blood Lions and World Animal Protection, reviewing 126 peer-reviewed articles and 37 public reports from 2008– 2023, finds no scientific evidence that this industry reduces pressure on wild lion populations, despite claims of conservation benefits.
