Over the past 30 years, South Africa’s commercial captive lion breeding industry has grown significantly, housing an estimated 7,838 lions across 342 facilities for tourism (e.g., cub petting), hunting, and trade in lion parts. A study by Blood Lions and World Animal Protection, reviewing 126 peer-reviewed articles and 37 public reports from 2008– 2023, finds no scientific evidence that this industry reduces pressure on wild lion populations, despite claims of conservation benefits. Instead, it may increase demand for lion parts, threatening vulnerable wild populations across Africa

South African authorities have charged John Hume, an 83-year-old former property developer and prominent rhino breeder, along with five alleged co-conspirators, in a major rhino horn trafficking syndicate involving 964 horns valued at R250 million ($14.1 million). The allegations, detailed in a draft indictment by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (The Hawks), claim that Hume and his associates used fraudulent permits to bypass a 50-year-old global ban on international rhino horn trade, effective since 1974 under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
