South Africa’s beef industry is reeling from a rampant foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, with 300 cases reported in 2025, mainly in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga. Farmers face economic devastation, with export losses in the hundreds of millions of rands, no compensation, and growing frustration over the state’s mismanagement. FMD, spread by uncontrolled animal movement (especially in communal and municipal lands), has slashed beef exports by 62% from January to June 2025, costing an estimated R800 million in lost revenue. China, a key market gained recently, is among those lost. Remaining markets include Jordan, UAE, and Kuwait.Domestic markets suffer too, with low prices for breeding cattle and calves at auctions due to buyer fears of financial risk.Feedlot operations face delays—quarantine and clearance disrupt supply, pushing Class A beef prices to R75/kg, while weaner calf prices drop from 65% to 50% of Class A.

Damvlakke in Mosselbaai en vier hoofopgaardamme is 10-40% laer as verlede jaar.

The Western Cape is sending a trade delegation to Canada in November 2025 to boost exports of wine and table grapes, capitalizing on a market gap left by Ontario’s boycott of US alcohol, sparked by Premier Doug Ford’s March 2025 order to remove American wines from Liquor Control Board (LCB) shelves. Other Canadian provinces followed, creating opportunities amid US-South Africa trade tensions and 30% US tariffs on SA goods. Minister Ivan Meyer, inspired by Canadians ditching Napa Valley wines, sees this as a chance to fill the void, a sentiment echoed at a G20 Summit prep dinner with Canada’s Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, who signaled Canada’s openness to trade. The CapeWine 2025 show (September 10-12) drew over 50 Canadian importers, including LCB reps, confirming interest in SA viticultural products.

According to the National Treasury, South Africa’s total land area is approximately 122.3 million hectares, of which farmland makes up 100.6 million hectares. Of this, 83.3% is grazing land with only 16.7 million hectares considered potentially arable land according to the Development Bank of Southern Africa. READ MORE

The one aspect that remains a concern to us is the higher input costs, particularly fertilizer. In August 2025, the prices of various fertilizer products, in rand terms, were generally up by over 10% from a year ago. This reflects the global environment of supply constraints in some key producing regions. Input costs will matter in planting decisions, and the shifts in various crops that farmers will plant, as they will have to assess the profitability levels. READ MORE

’n Volskaalse La Niña- of El Niño-stelsel word geklassifiseer wanneer see-oppervlaktemperature in Niño-gebiede vir vyf agtereenvolgende maande 0,5 °C koeler (La Niña) of warmer (El Niño) as normaal is.
Higher US tariffs under President Trump, coupled with retaliatory measures from trading partners like China, are hammering American farmers, especially soybean exporters, while rippling pain to South African agriculture.

Die gars vaar beter as verwag, ondanks slegs 45 mm groeiseisoenreën.

The Western Cape Government applauds Minister John Steenhuisen, G20 Agricultural Ministers, and the National Department of Agriculture for endorsing the G20 Food Security Task Force Declaration during South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

South Africa's agricultural exports to the US jumped 26% in Q2 2025 to $161 million, outpacing the usual 9% quarterly growth, thanks to a 90-day tariff pause letting savvy shippers flood the market.

South Africa’s tourism push for 15 million international visitors by 2029—unlocking 1 million direct jobs and 1.5 million indirect ones (up from 1.2 million, 8.9% GDP, R659 billion)—is stalling without muscle from South African Tourism (SAT), says Tourism Business Council CEO Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa.

South Africa is positioning itself as a global heavyweight in hemp and cannabis, blending its sunny climate, private-sector hustle, and smart policies to turn "weed" into economic wildfire.

Suid-Afrika se landbousektor, hoewel veerkragtig, staan voor groot uitdagings weens president Donald Trump se 30%-invoertarief op produkte soos sitrus, wyn, neute en vrugtesap, wat vanaf 1 Augustus 2025 geld.

The challenges that American farmers face, struggling with exports of their soybeans and other crops, show once again the importance of open and fair trade. The current higher U.S. tariffs, along with retaliatory measures by trading partners, pose a problem for everyone.

South Africa's Southern Cape avocado harvest is exploding, projected at 5,000–7,000 tons for 2025—double last year's 3,000 tons—thanks to new plantings and orchard expansions from Swellendam to Plettenberg Bay, says Derek Donkin, CEO of the Subtropical Growers' Association (Subtrop). It takes 7-8 years for trees to hit peak, so expect more growth ahead.

Voorspelling:
Ligte neerslae is moontlik in Oktober.
